Design is one of the easiest costs to challenge because its output is intangible before construction. A drawing review, coordination meeting, calculation, or commissioning plan can look like overhead compared with equipment and labor. The problem is that unresolved decisions do not disappear when design hours are removed. They simply move downstream, where they are more expensive to resolve.

Ambiguity becomes field labor

If drawings do not clearly show cable routes, mounting, power, network, blocking, rack requirements, and trade boundaries, installers must interpret the intent in the field. Different crews make different assumptions. Questions become RFIs. RFIs become schedule delay. Some become change orders.

Late decisions have a multiplier

Changing a display size during concept design may take minutes. Changing it after millwork is fabricated can affect structure, finish, mounting, power, cable length, camera position, and procurement. The technical decision is the same; the cost of making it is radically different.

Under-design creates operational inconsistency

When each site resolves missing details locally, the estate diverges. Support teams encounter different adapters, network configurations, mounting arrangements, firmware, and control behavior. The organization then pays an ongoing support tax long after construction closes.

Commissioning catches what drawings cannot

Even good design does not guarantee correct implementation. Commissioning verifies performance and configuration. Cutting commissioning because the system “turned on” transfers defects directly to users and support.

The first executive meeting should not be the acceptance test.

Compare design cost to lifecycle cost

For a room expected to operate for seven years, include design, equipment, construction, support incidents, travel, downtime, refresh, and user impact. A few additional engineering hours that eliminate one site visit or one change order can pay for themselves immediately.

The correct question is not “Can we reduce design cost?” It is “Which uncertainty are we choosing to carry into a more expensive phase?”

Under-design does not eliminate engineering decisions. It delegates them to the most expensive time and place to make them.

The practical objective is not more technology. It is a better-performing operation with clearer ownership, less friction, and technology that can be supported over its full lifecycle.
